Patriotism - my country invaded, occupied and oppressed peoples all over the world for centuries in the name of empire building.
Millions lived and died horribly violently because of it, cultures were decimated and people genocided. And they tell me,love my country. Love my freedumb. Love the city in which my family and friends are herded in order to feed the economic machine which knows nothing of my needs. Never mind the shit on the streets, feed the machine!
Now the Empire builder is the USA and the violence is televised and sold as entertainment, as is the freedumb. And the citizens are herded there just as readily as they are here. I saw a youtube yesterday - Tibetans marching outside the UN building in New York, beaten by police. Keep on rocking in the free world!
Patriotism? No thanks.
Imagine a world without nationhood, without empires, without boarders, without the violent oppression of 'others'
It's only our perception of self and other which gives rise to the violence and the systems of power which require the violence! But you and that boy in Afghanistan and the soldier in Iraq and the mother in Gaza are me! We are all one... Part of the same whole which would be incomplete without us!
I hope, pray and will that we we rediscover our unity.
