<description>&#60;p&#62;ok.  So here is the good news.  I'm working on a new open source Website Software system that is un-be-lievable.  It is based on the website framework that GC uses so upgrading should be fairly easy.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Here is the cool thing.  This new system has all kinds of cool cool website features that will be extremely useful in making GC more communal.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The bad news.  It's still quite a ways off.  GC will eventually get the new system but I'd like to get the new system (called Rexode) to version 1.0 first.  There is one possible exception which I'm still working out the business cases.  If GC becomes a convenient place to test this new system then it may become one of the first Rexodians. &#60;p&#62;Let me just add this: It would be absolutely reasonable that if the website made them angry for some reason that they can (and probably should) tell me.  That would actually be a respectful thing to do  ;)  It would be unreasonable to hold on to it and make my and your experiences/life bad.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;A report from Europe carried the following speech of Rabbi Emanuel Rabinovich before a  special meeting of the Emergency&#60;br /&#62;
Council of European Rabbis in Budapest, Hungary, January  12, 1952: &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;Greetings, my children; You have been called her to recapitulate the principal steps  of our new program. As you know, we had hoped to have twenty years between wars to consolidate the great gains which we made from World War II, but our increasing numbers in  certain vital areas is arousing opposition to us, and we must now work with every means at our disposal to precipitate World War III within five years [They did not precipitate World War III  but they did instigate the Korean War when on June 25, 1950 they ordered the North Korean army to launch a surprise attack on South Korea. On June 26, the U.N. Security Council condemned the invasion as aggression and ordered withdrawal of the invading forces. Then on  June 27, 1950, our Jewish American President Truman ordered air and naval units into action  to enforce the U.N. order. Not achieving their full goals, they then instigated the overthrow of South Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem, Premier under Bao Dai, who deposed the monarch in 1955 and established a republic with himself as President. Diem used strong U.S. backing to create an authoritarian regime, which soon grew into a fullscale war, with Jewish pressure escalating U.S.  involvement].&#60;br /&#62;
      The goal for which we have striven so concertedly FOR THREE THOUSAND YEARS is  at last within our reach, and because its fulfillment is so apparent, it behooves us to increase our efforts and our caution tenfold. I can safely promise you that before ten years have passed, our  race will take its rightful place in the world, with every Jew a king and every Gentile a slave (Applause from the gathering). You remember the success of our propaganda campaign during  the 1930's, which aroused anti-American passions in Germany at the same time we were arousing antiGerman passions in America, a campaign which culminated in the Second World  War. A similar propaganda campaign is now being waged intensively throughout the world. A war fever is being worked up in Russia by an incessant anti-American barrage while a nation  wide antiCommunist scare is sweeping America. This campaign is forcing all the smaller nations  to choose between the partnership of Russia or an alliance with the United States. Our most  pressing problem at the moment is to inflame the lagging militaristic spirit of the Americans. The  failure of the Universal Military Training Act was a great setback to our plans, but we are  assured that a suitable measure will be rushed through Congress immediately after the 1952  elections. The Russians, as well as the Asiatic peoples, are well under control and offer no  objections to war, but we must wait to secure the Americans. This we hope to do with the issue  of ANTISEMITISM, which worked so well in uniting the Americans against Germany. We are  counting heavily on reports of antiSemitic outrages in Russia to whip up indignation in the  United States and produce a front of solidarity against the Soviet power. Simultaneously, to  demonstrate to Americans the reality of antiSemitism, we will advance through new sources large sums of money to outspokenly anti-Semitic elements in America to increase their effectiveness, and WE SHALL STAGE ANTISEMITIC OUTBREAKS IN SEVERAL OF  THEIR LARGEST CITIES. This will serve the double purpose of exposing reactionary sectors in America, which then can be silenced, and of welding the United States into a devoted  antiRussian unit. (Note:  Protocol of Zion No. 9, para. 2, states that anti-Semitism is  controlled by them. At the time of this speech they had already commenced their campaign ofantiSemitism in Czechoslovakia). Within five years, this program will achieve its objective, the Third World War, which will surpass in destruction all previous contests.&#60;br /&#62;
Israeli, of course, will  remain neutral, and when both sides are devastated and exhausted, we will arbitrate, sending our Control Commissions into all wrecked countries. This war will end for all time our struggle  against the Gentiles. WE WILL OPENLY REVEAL OUR IDENTITY WITH THE RACES OF ASIA AND  AFRICA. I can state with assurance that the last generation of white children is now being born.  Our Control Commissions will, in the interests of peace and wiping out interracial tensions. FORBID THE WHITES TO MATE WITH WHITES. The White Women must cohabit with members of the dark races, the White Men with dark women. THUS THE WHITE RACE  WILL DISAPPEAR, FOR THE MIXING OF THE DARK WITH THE WHITE MEANS THE  END OF THE WHITE MAN, AND&#60;br /&#62;
OUR MOST DANGEROUS ENEMY WILL BECOME  ONLY A MEMORY. We shall embark upon an era of ten thousand years of peace and plenty, the Pax Judaica, and our race will rule undisputed over the world. Our superior intelligence will  easily enable us to retain mastery over a world of dark peoples.&#60;br /&#62;
   Question from the gathering: Rabbi Rabinovich, what about the various religions after the Third World War?&#60;br /&#62;
   Rabinovich: There will be no more religions. Not only would the existence of a priest class remain a constant danger to our&#60;br /&#62;
rule, but belief in an afterlife would give spiritual strength to irreconcilable elements in many countries, and enable them to resist us. We will, however, retain  the rituals and customs of Judaism as the mark of our hereditary ruling caste, strengthening our  racial laws so that no Jew will be allowed to marry outside our race, nor will any stranger be  accepted by us. (Note: Protocol of Zion No. 17 para. 2, states: 'Now that freedom of conscience  has been declared everywhere (as a result of their efforts they have previously stated) only years  divide us from the moment of THE COMPLETE WRECKING OF THAT [Hated] CHRISTIAN  RELIGION. As to other religions, we shall have still less difficulty with them.')&#60;br /&#62;
     We may have to repeat the grim days of World War II, when we were forced to let the Hitlerite bandits sacrifice some of our people, in order that we may have adequate documentation and witnesses to legally justify our trial and execution of the leaders of America and Russia as  war criminals, after we have dictated the peace. I am sure you will need little preparation for such a duty, for sacrifice has always been the watchword of our people, and the DEATH OF A  FEW THOUSAND JEWS in exchange&#60;br /&#62;
for world leadership is indeed a SMALL PRICE TO  PAY. To convince you of the certainty of that leadership, let me point out to you how we have  turned all of the inventions of the White Man into weapons against him. HIS PRINTING  PRESSES AND RADIOS are the MOUTHPIECES OF OUR DESIRES, and his heavy industry manufactures the instruments which he sends out to arm Asia and Africa against him.&#60;br /&#62;
     Our interests in Washington are greatly extending the POINT FOUR PROGRAM (viz.  COLOMBO PLAN) for developing industry in&#60;br /&#62;
backward areas of the world, so that after the industrial plants and cities of Europe and America are destroyed by atomic warfare, the Whites  can offer no resistance against the large masses of the dark races, who will maintain an  unchallenged technological superiority. And so, with the vision of world victory before you, go  back to your countries and intensify your good work, until that approaching day when Israeli will reveal herself in all her glorious destiny as the Light of the World.&#34; (Note: Every statement made  by Rabinovich is based on agenda contained in the &#34;Protocols of Zion.&#34;)

Mr. John Sherman has written us from a town in Ohio, U.S.A., as to the profits that may be made in the National Banking business under a recent act of your  Congress (National Bank Act of 1863), a copy of which act accompanied his letter. Apparently  this act has been drawn upon the plan formulated here last summer by the British Bankers  Association and by that Association recommended to our American friends as one that if enacted  into law, would prove highly profitable to the banking fraternity throughout the world. Mr.  Sherman declares that there has never before been such an opportunity for capitalists to  accumulate money, as that presented by this act and that the old plan, of State Banks is so  unpopular, that the new scheme will, by contrast, be most favorably regarded, notwithstanding  the fact that it gives the national Banks an almost absolute control of the National finance. 'The  few who can understand the system,' he says 'will either be so interested in its profits, or so dependent on its favors, that there will be no opposition from that class, while on the other hand, the great body of people, mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantages that  capital derives from the system, will bear its burdens without even suspecting that the system is  inimical to their interests.' Please advise us fully as to this matter and also state whether or not you will be of assistance to us, if we conclude to establish a National Bank in the City of New  York...Awaiting your reply, we are.&#34; (Rothschild Brothers. London, June 25, 1863.)&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62; &#34;The division of the United States into two federations of equal force was decided long before the Civil War by the High [Jewish] Financial Powers of Europe. These bankers were  afraid of the United States, if they remained in one block and as one nation, would attain economical and financial independence, which would upset their financial domination over the world. The voice of the Rothschilds predominated. They foresaw tremendous booty if they could substitute two feeble democracies, indebted to the Jewish financiers, to the vigorous Republic, confident and self-providing. Therefore, they started their emissaries to work in order to exploit the question of slavery and thus to dig an abyss between the two parts of the Republic. Lincoln never suspected these underground machinations. He was antiSlaverist, and he was  elected as such. But his character prevented him from being the man of one party. When he had affairs in his hands, he perceived that these sinister financiers of Europe, the Rothschilds, wished  to make him the executor of their designs. They made the rupture between the North and the South imminent! The master of finance in Europe made this rupture definitive in order to exploit  it to the utmost. Lincoln's personality surprised them. His candidature did not trouble them; they  though to easily dupe the candidate woodcutter. But Lincoln read their plots and soon  understood, that the South was not the worst foe, but the Jew financiers. He did not confide his  apprehensions, he watched the gestures of the Hidden Hand; he did not wish to expose publicly  the questions which would disconcert the ignorant masses.&#60;br /&#62;
     Lincoln decided to eliminate the international banker by establishing a system of loans,  allowing the States to borrow&#60;br /&#62;
directly from the people without intermediary. He did not study financial questions, but his robust good sense revealed to him,&#60;br /&#62;
that the source of any wealth  resides in the work and economy of the nation. He opposed emissions through the international&#60;br /&#62;
financiers. He obtained from Congress the right to borrow from the people by selling to it the  'bonds' of the States. The&#60;br /&#62;
local banks were only too glad to help such a system. And the Government and the nation escaped the plots of the foreign&#60;br /&#62;
financiers. They understood at once,  that the United States would escape their grip. The death of Lincoln was resolved upon.&#60;br /&#62;
Nothing  is easier than to find a fanatic to strike.  The death of Lincoln was the disaster for Christendom, continues Bismarck. There was no  man in the United States great enough to wear his boots. And Israel went anew to grab the riches  of the world. I fear that Jewish banks with their craftiness and tortuous tricks will entirely control  the exuberant riches of America, and use it to systematically corrupt modern civilization. The  Jews will not hesitate to plunge the whole of Christendom into wars and chaos, in order that 'the  earth should become the inheritance of Israel.'&#34; (La Vieille France, No. 216, March, 1921)&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62; In his novel Coningsby (London, 1844), Disraeli drew a picture form the life of the  Jews ruling the world from behind the thrones as graphic as anything in the Protocols of Nilus.  Many believe, and it has been proved to most, Coningsby was a plagiarism of a Byzantine novel  of the XVIIth century. The passage in which Rothschild (Sidonia) describes this is as follows:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;  &#34;If I followed my own impulse, I would remain here,&#34; said Sidonia. &#34;Can anything be more  absurd than that a nation should apply to an individual to maintain its credit, and with its credit,  its existence as an empire and its comfort as a people; and that individual one to whom its laws  deny the proudest rights of citizenship, the privilege of sitting in its senate and of holding land;  for though I have been rash enough to buy several estates, my own opinion is that by the existing law of England, an Englishman of Jewish faith cannot possess the soil.'  'But surely it would be easy to repeal a law so illiberal.'  'Oh! as for illiberality, I have no objection to it if it be an element of power. Eschew  political sentimentality. What I contend is that IF YOU PERMIT MEN TO ACCUMULATE  PROPERTY, AND THEY USE THAT PERMISSION TO A GREAT EXTENT, POWER IS INSEPARABLE FROM THAT PROPERTY, and it is in the last degree impolitic to make it in  the interest of any powerful class to oppose the institutions under which they live. The Jews, for example, independent of the capital qualities for citizenship which they possess in their industry,  temperance, and energy and vivacity of mind, are a race essentially monarchical, deeply religious  and shrinking themselves from converts as from a calamity, are ever anxious to see the religious  systems of the countries in which they live, flourish; yet since your society&#60;br /&#62;
has become agitated  in England and powerful combinations menace your institutions, you find the once loyal Jew  invariably&#60;br /&#62;
arrayed in the same ranks as the leveller and the latitudinarian, and prepared to  support rather than tamely continue under a system which seeks to degrade him.&#60;br /&#62;
       The Tories  lose an important election at a critical moment; 'Its the Jews who come forward to vote against  them. The Church is alarmed at the scheme of a latitudinarian university, and learns with relief that  funds are not forthcoming for its establishment; a Jew immediately advances and endows it. Yet  the Jews, Coningsby, are essentially Tories. Toryism indeed is but copied from the mighty  prototype which has fashioned Europe. And every generation they must become more powerful  and more dangerous to the society which is hostile to them. Do you think that the quiet humdrum  persecution of a decorous representative of an English university can crush those who have  successively baffled the Pharaos, Nebuchadnezzar, Rome, and the feudal ages?&#60;br /&#62;
     The fact is YOU CANNOT DESTROY A PURE RACE OF WHITE ORGANIZATION. It is a physiological fact; a simple law of nature, which has baffled Egyptian and Assyrian kings, Roman emperors, and Christian  inquisitors. No penal laws, no physical tortures, can effect that a superior race should be  absorbed in an inferior, or be destroyed by it. The mixed persecuting races disappear, the pure  persecuted race remains. And at this moment in spite of centuries, or tens of centuries, of  degradation, the Jewish mind exercises a vast influence on the affairs of Europe. I speak of theirlaws, which you still obey; of their literature, with which your minds are saturated; but of the living Jewish intellect.&#60;br /&#62;
     You never observe a great intellectual movement in Europe in which the Jews do not greatly  participate. The first Jesuits were Jews; that mysterious Russian diplomacy which so alarms Western Europe is organized and principally carried on by Jews; that mighty revolution (of 1848)  which will be in fact [followed] by a second an greater Reformation, and of which so little is as  yet known in England, is entirely developing under the auspices of Jews, who almost monopolize  the professorial chairs of Germany. Neander the founder of Spiritual Christianity, and who is  Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Berlin, is a Jew. Benary, equally famous and  in the same university, is a Jew. Wehl, the Arabic Professor of Heidelberg, is a Jew. Years ago,  when I was in Palestine, I met a German student who was accumulating materials for the history of Christianity and studying the genius of the place; a modest and learned man. It was Wehl;  then unknown, since become the first Arabic scholar of the day, and the author of the life of Mohamet. But for the German professors of this race, their name is legion. I think there are  more than ten at Berlin alone.&#60;br /&#62;
     I told you just now that I was going up to town tomorrow, because I always made it a rule  to interpose when affairs of state were on the carpet. Otherwise, I never interfere. I hear of  peace and war in the newspapers, but I am never alarmed, except when I am informed that the  sovereigns want treasure; then I know that monarchs are serious.  A few years back we were applied to by Russia. Now there  has been no friendship between  the Court of St. Petersburg and my family.      Rollin, Pierred Leroux, and a group of socialists, among whom was Maurice Joly [His father  was Philippe Lambert Joly,&#60;br /&#62;
born at Dieppe, AttorneyGeneral of the Jura under LouisPhilippe for ten years. His mother Florentine Corbara Courtois, was the&#60;br /&#62;
daughter of Laurent Courtois,  paymastergeneral of Corsica, who had an inveterate hatred of Napoleon I. Maurice Joly was born in&#60;br /&#62;
1831 at LonsleSaulnier and educated at Dijon: there he had begun his law studies, but  left for Paris in 1849 to secure a post in&#60;br /&#62;
the Ministry of the Interior under M. Chevreau and just  before the coup d'etat. He did not finish his law studies till 1860.&#60;br /&#62;
     Joly, some thirty years younger than Cremieux, with an inherited hatred of the Bonapartes,  seems to have fallen very largely under his influence. Through Cremieux, Joly became acquainted with communists and their writings. Though, until 1871 when his ambition for a  government post turned him into a violent communist, he had not in 1864 gone beyond  socialism, he was so impressed with the way they presented their arguments that he could not,  if the chance were offered, refrain from imitating it.&#60;br /&#62;
     And this chance came in 18641865, when his hatred of Napoleon, whetted by Cremieux,  led him to publish anonymously&#60;br /&#62;
in Brussels the Dialogues aux Enfers entre Machiavelli et Montesquieu. In this work he tells us, 'Machiavelli represents the policy of Might, while  Montesquieu stands for that of Right: Machiavelli will be Napoleon, who will himself describe his abominable policy.' It was natural that he should choose the Italian Machiavelli to stand for  Bonaparte, and the Frenchman Montesquieu, for the ideal statesman: it was equally natural that  he should put in the mouth of Machiavelli some of the same expressions which Venedey had put  in it, and which Joly had admired. His own view was: 'Socialism seems to me one of the forms  of a new life for the people emancipated from the traditions of the old world. I accept a great many of the solutions offered by socialism; but I reject communism, either as a social factor, or  as a political institution. Communism is but a school of socialism. In politics, I understand  extreme means to gain one's ends, in that at least, I am a Jacobin.&#34; &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;----------------------------------------------------&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62; &#34;Freemasonry was a good and sound institution in principle, but revolutionary  agitators, principally Jews, taking advantage of its organization as a secret society, penetrated  it little by little. They have corrupted it and turned it from its moral and philanthropic aim in  order to employ it for revolutionary purposes. This would explain why certain parts of  freemasonry have remained intact such as English masonry.&#60;br /&#62;
     In support of this theory we may quote what a Jew, Bernard Lazare has said in his book:  l'antisemitiseme: 'What were the&#60;br /&#62;
relations between the Jews and the secret societies? That is not easy to elucidate, for we lack reliable evidence. Obviously they did not dominate in these  associations, as the writers, whom I have just mentioned, pretended; they were not necessarily  the soul, the head, the grand master of masonry as Gougenot des Mousseaux affirms. It is certain  however that there were Jews in the very cradle of masonry, kabbalist Jews, as some of the rites  which have been preserved prove. It is most probable that, in the years which preceded the  French Revolution, they entered the councils of this sect in increasing numbers and founded  secret societies themselves. Cragg gambled. Cragg lost, and I agree that it was not the content as much as it was the rules of the structure that made this an issue at all. Any creation exists in concert with structure. There is not one art form that is not draped on some form of predictable structure. If the leaving of our thoughts must occur within the parameters of this structure you have laid down, then so be it. It is your show, and while we are contributers, we are not the creators, and you are at least due that respect in my opinion... or I am sure to be free to go off and build my own site, and do as I want to there, right? Topics commonly avoided and designated taboo in public have had a full examination here from time to time. The people who stick around, grow, but granted, they play and post within the structure. All satire and examination aside, you have done a great job of keeping it pure and true to its original purpose, and it is still developing. Your lack of time to moderate it has made it a special place to be sure. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In all fairness to you, I would revise the earlier statement implying that you had not released your creation to the 'wind, sand, and waves of fate', and instead state that you have, to an extent, perhaps the furthest extent feasibly possible. Maybe it is fair to say that you have released the space to as great an extent as to be just short of full on typographical anarchy. You have done that, and the space has never stopped evolving. The use of the site coupled with the ceaseless turning of the message spool is an excellent reflection of all things transitory, including mind, in that GC has never become anything, because it is always in a state of becoming. I love that about this space, appreciate your efforts, and I am glad you continue to maintain it. I don't really care what you, or anyone else for that matter, writes.  This is a democratic zone and you broke the rules thus causing your own diminished access.  Normally these rules are enforced by the system.  In this broken time period the rules were not enforced.  It was up to you, the user, to play nice within the community.  Clearly, you have demonstrated why these rules absolutely need to be enforced.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Your Jesus-based tower of rage is very unbecoming and is not converting anyone.  Calling people names won't help your attempt.  If you want to open peoples' ears you may want to start out without the slap in the face.&#60;/p&#62;

The purpose was to channel healing love energy into the planet itself, to focus our attention on the thing or things that bring us the most joy and happiness, and to channel that joy, as a healing intention, into the earth. You didn't have to be practised or experienced in meditation to join in, simply listening to your favourite music was enough, if listening to that music brought joy to your soul!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;For two years now the resonance, the vibrational energy, of that meditation has been making its way around the earth, coming to rest in the vast crystal beds bellow Brazil.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;And in 28 days we will get to work again with our second global meditation. This time the intention is to bring that healing energy up, out of the earth and to channel it into the world of our own creation, to manifest in love, our vision of the perfect future, what ever that may mean to each of us.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;I was challenged by Bernie (who used to come here) to share 10 facts about myself. This was quite a while ago now, in myspace (a place I hardly visit any more). I've just looked back at the blog I wrote in response to that challenge and decided to bring it here and to, step by step, over time, expand on each of the things I shared, though one or two tell the whole story.&#60;br /&#62;
So, here are the 10 things I chose to reveal about myself...&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;1.  I love this life! We're each blessed with the ability to face every challenge this life presents to us. The trick is to recognise that ability within yourself. Once you've done that the world is your oyster and the opportunities for joy are literally unlimited! Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Not that it isn't hard work, it is, but the rewards for you effort are enormous. :o)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;2. I am a spiritual being enjoying a human journey.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;3. I have 3 stunningly beautiful nieces. I love those girls more than anything else. My life would be full and blessed without them, with them my joy and blessings are boundless!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;4.  I believe in AngelsÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ Earth Angels take on human form and walk with us, Heavenly Angels guide us spiritually.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;5. I am astounded at some of the connections I've made around the world thanks to the internet. I am so grateful to have you all in my life and continue to be amazed at the way you each touch my life! Thank you!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;6. I need to paint more Ã¢â‚¬â€œ to make the time to be creative, simply because splashing colour around can be so much fun and I don't do it often enough!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;7.  I love to play! -  To fly kites and build sand-castles and to run fast for the sake of running fastÃ¢â‚¬Â¦. Laughing breathlessly is FUN!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;8. I feel a deep connection with nature- especially with birds and with treesÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ Kind of like a kinship with them. I long ago discovered the consciousness of trees when a group of us went to a stone circle called Long Meg and her Daughters (or is that sisters?!? ). I stood in the kind of curved indent of the trunk of an ancient yew tree while my friends tried to count the number of stones in the circle Ã¢â‚¬â€œ it's impossible to get the same number twiceÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ Really! Ã¢â‚¬â€œ and as they counted and I watched, the tree 'showed' me its history. I stood there for ages (literally?) absorbing images of druid council meeting, of women being sought for advice and wisdom, of men taking decisions for the whole clanÃ¢â‚¬Â¦. Amazing! I was still there when my friends decided it was time to leave and started looking for me. I was right in front of them, but they didn't see me until I broke physical contact with the tree! True story! :o)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;9. I've always been a spiritual person, but it wasn't until I stopped smoking that my spirit really opened up. That's when I began to grow (and heal) in ways I'd never even imagined were possible before. I stopped smoking about 18 months ago. (Now closer to three years.)&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;10. Politics, and the way the world is run, by whom, and for what purpose are also very important to me. I believe we can achieve peace in this world, healing for this world, but I believe that we have to know where to direct our healing energiesÃ¢â‚¬Â¦ And, of course, what to write in all those letters and emails we send to our MP's and Congress-people! That's right people, I'm asking you to get your pens out! ;o)

&#60;p&#62;IN THE PRECEDING CHAPTERS has been shown how the components were successively formed which make up the so-called Ã¢â‚¬Å“lower nature of manÃ¢â‚¬Â Ã¢â‚¬â€ the physical body, the ether body and the astral body. It has also been described how, with the appearance of a new body, the old ones must always be transformed so that they can become carriers and instruments of the one formed later. An advance of human consciousness is also associated with this progress. As long as the lower man has only a physical body, he possess merely an utterly dull consciousness, which is not equivalent even to that of dreamless sleep of the present, although for man of today this latter state of consciousness is in fact an Ã¢â‚¬Å“unconsciousÃ¢â‚¬Â one. In the time when the ether body appears, man reaches the consciousness which is his today in dreamless sleep. With the formation of the astral body a dim image consciousness makes its appearance, similar to, but not identical with the one man at present ascribes to himself while he is dreaming. The fourth, the current condition of consciousness of earth man, will now be described.&#60;br /&#62;
This present condition of consciousness develops in the fourth great universal era, that of earth which follows the preceding Saturn, Sun, and Moon eras.&#60;br /&#62;
On Saturn the physical body of man was developed in several stages. At that time it could not have been the carrier of an ether body. And the latter was added only during the course of the Sun. Simultaneously, the physical body was so transformed in the successive Sun cycles that it could become the carrier of this ether body, or in other words, that the ether body could work in the physical body. During the Moon development the astral body was added, and again the physical body and the ether body were transformed in such a way that they could provide suitable carriers and instruments for the then appearing astral body. Thus, on the Moon, man is a being composed of physical body, ether body, and astral body. Through the ether body he is enabled to feel joy and pain; through the astral body he is a being with emotions, rage, hate, love and so forth.&#60;br /&#62;
As has been shown, higher spirits actively work on the different members of his being. On the Moon the ether body received the capacity for joy and pain through the Spirits of Twilight; the emotions were implanted in the astral body by the Fire Spirits.&#60;br /&#62;
At the same time, something else was taking place during the three great cycles on Saturn, Sun, and Moon. During the last Saturn cycle the spirit man (Atma) was formed with the help of the Spirits of Will (Thrones). During the penultimate Sun cycle, the life-spirit (Buddhi) was joined to it with the assistance of the Cherubim. During the third from the last Moon cycle, the spirit-self (Manas) united with the two others through the help of the Seraphim. Thus actually two origins of man were formed during these three great cycles: a lower man, consisting of physical body, ether body, and astral body, and a higher man, consisting of spirit man (Atma), life-spirit (Buddhi), and spirit-self (Manas). The lower and the higher nature of man followed separate paths at first.&#60;br /&#62;
The earth development serves to bring the two separate origins of man together.&#60;br /&#62;
But first, after the seventh small cycle, all of Moon existence enters a kind of sleeping state (Pralaya). Thereby everything becomes mixed together, so to speak, in a homogeneous mass. The Sun and the Moon too, which were separate in the last great cycle, again become fused during the last Moon cycles.&#60;br /&#62;
When everything again emerges from the sleeping state there must first be repeated in their essentials the Saturn condition during a first small cycle, the Sun condition during a second, and the Moon cycle during a third. During this third cycle the beings on the Moon, which has again been split off from the Sun, resume approximately the same forms of existence which they already had on the Moon. There the lower man is a being intermediate between man of today and an animal; the plants stand midway between the animal and plant natures of today, and the minerals only half bear their lifeless character of today, while for the rest they are still half plants.&#60;br /&#62;
During the second half of this third cycle something else is already in preparation. The minerals harden, the plants gradually lose the animal character of their sensibility, and out of the uniform species of animal man there develop two classes. One of these remains on the level of animality, while the other is subjected to a division of the astral body into two parts. The astral body splits into a lower part, which continues to be the carrier of the emotions, and a higher part, which attains to a certain independence, so that it can exercise a kind of mastery over the lower members, over the physical body, the ether body, and the lower astral body. Now the Spirits of Personality seize upon this higher astral body and implant in it just that independence we have mentioned, and therewith also selfishness. Only in the lower human astral body do the Fire Spirits now accomplish their work, while in the ether body the Spirits of Twilight are active, and in the physical body that power entity begins its work which one can describe as the real ancestor of man. It is the same power entity which formed the spirit man (Atma) with the help of the Thrones on Saturn, the life-spirit (Buddhi) with the assistance of the Cherubim on the Sun, and the spirit-self (Manas) together with the Seraphim on the Moon.&#60;br /&#62;
But now this changes. Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim ascend to higher spheres, and the higher man now receives the assistance of the Spirits of Wisdom, of Motion, and of Form. These are now united with spirit-self, life-spirit, and spirit-man (with Manas-Buddhi-Atma). With the assistance of these entities the human power being characterized above develops its physical body during the second half of the third earth cycle. It is the Spirits of Form which act here in the most significant way. They already form the human physical body so that it becomes a kind of precursor of the later human body of the fourth cycle (the present one, or the fourth round)&#60;br /&#62;
In the astral body of the animal beings which have been left behind, it is exclusively the Fire Spirits which remain active, while in the ether body of the plants it is the Spirits of Twilight. 0n the other hand, the Spirits of Form participate in the transformation of the mineral realm. They make the latter hard, that is, implant rigid and fixed forms in it.&#60;br /&#62;
One must not imagine, however, that the sphere of activity of the spirits we have mentioned was confined only to what has been characterized. Always it is only the Main directions of their activities which are meant, in a subordinate way all the spirit beings participate everywhere. Thus at the time indicated, the Spirits of Form also have certain functions to perform in the physical plant and animal bodies, and so forth.&#60;br /&#62;
After all this has taken place, around the end of the third earth cycle all the entities Ã¢â‚¬â€ including Sun and Moon Ã¢â‚¬â€ again become fused and then pass through a shorter stage of sleep (a small Pralaya). At that time everything is again a uniform mass (a chaos), and at the end of this stage the fourth earth cycle begins in which we are at present.&#60;br /&#62;
At first, everything which already previously had had a being in the mineral, plant, animal, and human realms, begins to separate out of the uniform mass in germinal form. First there can re-emerge as independent germs only those human ancestors on whose higher astral bodies the Spirits of Personality have worked in the preceding small cycle. All other beings of the mineral, plant, and animal realm do not yet lead an independent existence here. At this stage everything is still in that high spiritual condition which is called the Ã¢â‚¬Å“formlessÃ¢â‚¬Â or Arupa condition. At the present stage of development, only the highest human thoughts Ã¢â‚¬â€ for example, mathematical and moral ideals Ã¢â‚¬â€ are woven of that substance which was proper to all beings at the stage we are describing. That which is lower than these human ancestors can only appear as an activity in a higher being. The animals exist only as states of consciousness of the Spirits of Fire, the plants as states of consciousness of the Spirits of Twilight. The minerals have a double existence in thought. First they exist as thought germs in the human ancestors mentioned above, then as thoughts in the consciousness of the Spirits of Form. The Ã¢â‚¬Å“higher manÃ¢â‚¬Â (spirit-man, life-spirit, spirit-self also exists in the consciousness of the Spirits of Form.&#60;br /&#62;
By degrees a densification of everything now occurs. But at the next stage, the density as yet does not exceed the density of thoughts. At this stage, however, the animal beings which originated in the preceding cycle, can emerge. They separate out of the consciousness of the Fire Spirits and become independent thought beings. This stage is called that of the Ã¢â‚¬Å“formedÃ¢â‚¬Â or Rupa condition. Man advances in it insofar as his previously formless, independent thought body is clothed by the Spirits of Form in a body of coarser, formed thought substance. The animals as independent beings, here consist exclusively of this substance.&#60;br /&#62;
Now a further densification takes place. The condition which is now attained can be compared with that out of which the conceptions of the dreamlike image consciousness are woven. One calls this the Ã¢â‚¬Å“astralÃ¢â‚¬Â stage.&#60;br /&#62;
The human ancestor again advances. In addition to the other two components, his being receives a body which consists of the substance just characterized. He now has the inner formless core of being, a thought body, and an astral body. The animals receive a similar astral body, and the plants emerge from the consciousness of the Spirits of Twilight as independent astral entities.&#60;br /&#62;
In the further course of the development, the densification now advances to that condition which is called physical. At first we deal with the most refined physical condition, with that of the most refined ether. From the Spirits of Form the human ancestor receives the most refined ether body as an addition to his earlier components. He consists of a formless thought core, a formed thought body, an astral body, and an ether body. The animals have a formed thought body, an astral body, and an ether body; the plants have an astral and an ether body; the minerals first emerge here as independent ether forms. At this stage of development we are concerned with four realms: a mineral, a plant, an animal, and a human realm. Along with these however, in the course of the development up to this point three other realms have come into existence. In the time when the animals separated from the Fire Spirits at the thought stage (Rupa stage), the Spirits of Personality also separated certain entities out of themselves. These consist of indefinite thought substance which gathers together, dissolves in a cloudlike manner, and thus flows along. One cannot speak of them as of independent entities, but only of an irregular, general mass. This is the first elementary realm. At the astral stage something similar separates from the Fire Spirits. It consists of shadowy images or phantoms similar to the conceptions of the dreamlike image consciousness. They form the second elementary realm. In the beginning of the physical stage, indefinite image-like entities finally separate out of the Spirits of Twilight. They too have no independence, but they can manifest forces which are similar to the passions and emotions of men and animals. These non-independent, buzzing emotions form the third elementary realm. For beings which are endowed with a dreamlike image consciousness, or with conscious image consciousness, these creations of the third elementary realm are perceptible as a flooding light, as flakes of color, as smell, taste, as various tones and sounds, but all such perceptions must be imagined to be phantom-like.&#60;br /&#62;
One must therefore imagine the earth, when it condenses as a refined etheric body out of its astral precursor, to be a conglomerate of an etheric mineral basic mass and of etheric plant, animal, and human beings. Filling the interstices as it were, and also permeating the other beings, are the creatures of the elementary realms.&#60;br /&#62;
This earth is inhabited by the higher spiritual entities, which, in the most diverse ways, are active in the realms we have mentioned. They form a spirit community, so to speak, a spirit state, and their dwelling-place and workshop is the earth, which they carry with them as a snail does its shell. In all this it must be borne in mind that what today is separated from the earth as Sun and Moon, is still entirely united with the earth. Only later do both heavenly bodies separate from the earth.&#60;br /&#62;
The Ã¢â‚¬Å“higher manÃ¢â‚¬Â (spirit-man, life-spirit, spirit-self, Atma-Buddhi-Manas) has as yet no independence at this stage. He still constitutes a member of the spirit state, and for the time being is bound to the Spirits of Form, as a human hand is bound to a human organism as a dependent member.&#60;br /&#62;
With this we have followed the formation of the earth to the beginning of its physical condition. In what follows, we shall show how everything in this condition develops further. The previous development will then pass over into what has already been said in preceding chapters of the Akasha Chronicle about the progress of earth.&#60;br /&#62;
States of development such as those which have been mentioned here as a formless, a formed, an astral, and a physical condition, which thus constitute differences in a smaller cycle (a round), are called Ã¢â‚¬Å“globesÃ¢â‚¬Â in theosophical texts. In this respect one therefore speaks of an Arupa, a Rupa, an astral and a physical globe. Some have considered such a designation incorrect. But here we shall not speak further of matters of nomenclature. Indeed, it is not names which are important, but rather the things themselves. It is better to endeavor to describe the latter as well as possible than to worry very much about names. These must after all always be incorrect in a certain sense. For to facts of the spiritual world one must give names which have come from the world of the senses, and therefore one can speak only by way of similes.&#60;br /&#62;
The description of the development of the world of man has been brought to the point where the earth reaches the beginning of its physical densification. One should now represent to oneself the condition of development of this world of man at this stage. What later appears as sun, moon, and earth is still united in a single body. This body possesses only refined etheric matter. It is only within this matter that the beings which later will appear as men, animals, plants, and minerals have their existence, For the further progress of the development, the one heavenly body must first separate into two, of which one becomes the later sun, while the other contains the later earth and the later moon in a still united form. Only later does a process of division also take place in this latter heavenly body; that which becomes the present-day moon is extruded, and the earth alone remains as the dwelling-place of man and of his fellow-creatures.&#60;br /&#62;
The student of ordinary theosophical literature should understand clearly that the separation of the one heavenly body into two took place in the period in which this literature places the development of the so-called second principal human race. The human ancestors of this race are described as forms with refined etheric bodies. But one must not imagine that they could have developed on our present earth after it had already separated itself from the sun and had expelled the moon. After this separation, such etheric bodies were no longer possible.&#60;br /&#62;
If one follows the development of mankind in that cycle to which our description has now come, and which leads us into the present, one becomes aware of a series of principal conditions, of which our current one is the fifth.&#60;br /&#62;
The preceding expositions from the Akasha Chronicle have already dealt with these conditions. Here we shall only repeat what is necessary for a further deepening of the discussion.&#60;br /&#62;
The first principal condition shows the human ancestors as highly refined etheric entities. The usual theosophical literature somewhat inexactly calls these entities the first principal race. This condition essentially continues during the second epoch, in which this literature places the second principal race. Until this stage of development sun, moon, and earth are still one heavenly body. Now the sun splits off as an independent body. It thereby takes those forces through which the human ancestors could be maintained in their etheric condition. With the splitting-off of the sun a densification of the human forms and also of the forms of man's fellow-creatures takes place. These creatures must now adapt themselves to their new dwelling-place, as it were.&#60;br /&#62;
But it is by no means only the material forces which are taken away from this dwelling-place. Spiritual entities, of whom it has been said that they formed a spirit community on the one heavenly body we have described, also leave at the same time. Their existence remains more intimately connected with the sun then with the heavenly body which the sun has thrust out from itself. If these entities had remained united with the forces which later develop on the earth and on the moon, they themselves could not have developed further to their appropriate levels. They needed a new dwelling-place for this further development. This is provided for them by the sun after it Ã¢â‚¬â€ so to speak Ã¢â‚¬â€ has cleansed itself of the earth and moon forces. At the stage at which these beings now are, they can act on earth and moon forces only from the outside, from the sun.&#60;br /&#62;
One can see the reason for the separation we have described. Until this time, certain entities which are higher than man have gone through their development on the one heavenly body characterized above; they now lay claim to a part of it for themselves, and leave the rest to man and his fellow-creatures.&#60;br /&#62;
The consequence of the splitting-off of the sun was a radical revolution in the development of man and of his fellow-creatures. They fell as it were from a higher level of existence to a lower. They had to do this, for they lost the immediate connection with those higher beings. They would have entered entirely into a blind alley in their own development if other universal events had not taken place, through which progress was stimulated anew and the development directed into quite different channels.&#60;br /&#62;
With the forces which at present are united in the split-off moon, and which at that time were still within the earth, further progress would have been impossible. Present-day mankind could not have been produced with these forces, but, instead, only a kind of being in which the emotions of rage, hate and so forth, developed during the third great cycle, the Moon existence, would have increased to the point of the immoderate and animal.&#60;br /&#62;
During a certain period, this was in fact the case. The immediate consequence of the splitting-off of the sun was the arising of the third principal condition of the ancestors of man, which in theosophical literature is designated as the third principle race, the Lemurian. Again, the designation Ã¢â‚¬Å“raceÃ¢â‚¬Â for this condition of development is not an especially fortunate one. For in a real sense, the human ancestors of that time cannot be compared with what today one designates as Ã¢â‚¬Å“race.Ã¢â‚¬Â One must be completely clear about the fact that the evolutionary forms of the distant past as well as of the future are so entirely different from those of today that our present appellations can only serve as makeshifts, and really lose all meaning in relation to these remote epochs.&#60;br /&#62;
Actually, one can only begin to speak of Ã¢â‚¬Å“racesÃ¢â‚¬Â in connection with the development attained in about the second third of the third principal condition identified above (the Lemurian). Only then is formed what today one calls Ã¢â‚¬Å“races.Ã¢â‚¬Â This Ã¢â‚¬Å“racial characterÃ¢â‚¬Â is retained in the period of the Atlantean development, and further into our time of the fifth principal condition. But already at the end of our fifth era, the word Ã¢â‚¬Å“raceÃ¢â‚¬Â will again lose all sense. In future, mankind will be divided into parts which it will be impossible to designate as Ã¢â‚¬Å“races.Ã¢â‚¬Â In this respect, ordinary theosophical literature has caused much confusion. This has especially been done by Sinnett's Esoteric Buddhism, the book which, on the other hand, has the great merit of having been the first to popularize the theosophical world-outlook in recent times. In this book the universal development is described as if, throughout the cosmic cycles, the Ã¢â‚¬Å“racesÃ¢â‚¬Â forever repeated themselves in the same way. But this is by no means the case. That which deserves to be called Ã¢â‚¬Å“raceÃ¢â‚¬Â also comes into being and perishes. One should only use the expression Ã¢â‚¬Å“raceÃ¢â‚¬Â for a certain span in the development of mankind. Before and after this, there are evolutionary forms which are something totally different from Ã¢â‚¬Å“races.Ã¢â‚¬Â&#60;br /&#62;
Only because the true deciphering of the Akasha Chronicle fully authorizes one to make such a remark have we presumed to make it here. In this the decipherer knows himself to be in complete accord with true occult spiritual investigation. Otherwise it could never occur to him to make such objections against the meritorious books of theosophical literature. He might also make the really quite superfluous remark that the inspirations of the great teachers mentioned in Esoteric Buddhism are not contradicted by what has been described here, but that the misunderstanding has only been produced by the fact that the author of that book has transposed the wisdom of these inspirations, which is difficult to express, into modern every-day human language, in his own way.&#60;br /&#62;
The third principal condition of the development of mankind presents itself as the one in which the Ã¢â‚¬Å“racesÃ¢â‚¬Â first came into being. This event was brought about by the separation of the moon from the earth. This separation was accompanied by the originating of the two sexes. This stage of the development of mankind has been repeatedly referred to in the descriptions from the Ã¢â‚¬Å“Akasha Chronicle.Ã¢â‚¬Â When the earth, still united with the moon, split off from the sun, a male and a female sex did not as yet exist within mankind. Each human being combined the two sexes within its still highly refined body.&#60;br /&#62;
It must be remembered however that these double-sexed human ancestors were on a low level of development as compared with present-day man. The lower impulses acted with immeasurable energy, and nothing of a spiritual development as yet existed. That the latter was stimulated and that thereby the lower impulses were confined within certain bounds, is connected with the fact that, at the same time at which earth and moon separated, the former came into the sphere of influence of other heavenly bodies. This extremely significant co-operation of the earth with other heavenly bodies, its meeting with foreign planets, in the time which theosophical literature calls the Lemurian, will be related in a further chapter of the Ã¢â‚¬Å“Akasha Chronicle.Ã¢â‚¬Â&#60;br /&#62;
The same course of development will be described once more, but from a different point of view. This is done for a quite definite reason. One can never look at the truths about the higher worlds from too many aspects. One should realize that from any one aspect it is possible to give only the poorest sketch. And when one looks at the same thing from the most diverse aspects, the impressions one receives in this way only gradually complement each each other to form an ever more animated picture. Only such pictures, not dry, schematic concepts, can help the man who wants to penetrate into the higher worlds. The more animated and colorful the pictures, the more can one hope to approach the higher reality.&#60;br /&#62;
It is obvious that it is just the pictures from the higher worlds which arouse mistrust in many today. A person is quite content to be given conceptual schemes and classifications Ã¢â‚¬â€ with as many names as possible Ã¢â‚¬â€ of Devachan, of the development of the planets, and so forth; but he becomes more difficult when somebody presumes to describe the supersensible worlds as a traveller describes the landscapes of South America. Yet one should realize that it is only through fresh, animated pictures that one is given something useful, not through dead schemes and names

&#60;p&#62;IN THIS CHAPTER we shall learn about the transition of the fourth, the Atlantean root race, into the fifth, the Aryan, to which contemporary civilized mankind belongs. Only he will understand it aright who can steep himself in the idea of development to its full extent and meaning. Everything which man perceives around him is in process of development. In this sense, the use of thought, which is characteristic of the men of our fifth root race, had first to develop. It is this root race in particular which slowly and gradually brings the faculty of thought to maturity. In his thought, man decides upon something, and then executes it as the consequence of his own thought. This ability was only in preparation among the Atlanteans. It was not their own thoughts, but those which flowed into them from entities of a higher kind, that influenced their will. Thus, in a manner of speaking, their will was directed from outside.&#60;br /&#62;
The one who familiarizes himself with the thought of this development of the human being and learns to admit that man Ã¢â‚¬â€ as earthly man Ã¢â‚¬â€ was a being of a quite different kind in prehistory, will also be able to rise to a conception of the totally different entities which are spoken of here. The development to be described required enormously long periods of time.&#60;br /&#62;
What has previously been said about the fourth root race, the Atlanteans, refers to the great bulk of mankind. But they followed leaders whose abilities towered far above theirs. The wisdom these leaders possessed and the powers at their command were not to be attained by any earthly education. They had been imparted to them by higher beings which did not belong directly to earth. Therefore it was only natural that the great mass of men felt their leaders to be beings of a higher kind, to be Ã¢â‚¬Å“messengersÃ¢â‚¬Â of the gods. For what these leaders knew and could do would not have been attainable by human sense organs and by human reason. They were venerated as Ã¢â‚¬Å“divine messengers,Ã¢â‚¬Â and men received their orders, their commandments, and also their instruction. It was by beings of this kind that mankind was instructed in the sciences, in the arts, and in the making of tools. Such Ã¢â‚¬Å“divine messengersÃ¢â‚¬Â either directed the communities themselves or instructed men who were sufficiently advanced in the art of government. It was said of these leaders that they Ã¢â‚¬Å“communicate with the godsÃ¢â‚¬Â and were initiated by the gods themselves into the laws according to which mankind had to develop. This was true. In places about which the average people knew nothing, this initiation, this communication with the gods, actually took place. These places of initiation were called temples of the mysteries. From them the human race was directed.&#60;br /&#62;
What took place in the temples of the mysteries was therefore incomprehensible to the people. Equally little did the latter understand the intentions of their great leaders. After all, the people could grasp with their senses only what happened directly upon earth, not what was revealed from higher worlds for the welfare of earth. Therefore the teachings of the leaders had to be expressed in a form unlike communications about earthly events. The language the gods spoke with their messengers in the mysteries was not earthly, and neither were the shapes in which these gods revealed themselves. The higher spirits appeared to their messengers Ã¢â‚¬Å“in fiery cloudsÃ¢â‚¬Â in order to tell them how they were to lead men. Only man can appear in human form; entities whose capacities tower above the human must reveal themselves in shapes which are not to be found on earth.&#60;br /&#62;
Because they themselves were the most perfect among their human brothers, the Ã¢â‚¬Å“divine messengersÃ¢â‚¬Â could receive these revelations. In earlier stages they had already gone through what the majority of men still had to experience. They belonged among their fellow humans only in a certain respect. They could assume human form. But their spiritual-mental qualities were of a superhuman kind. Thus they were divine-human hybrid beings. One can also describe them as higher spirits who assumed human bodies in order to help mankind forward on their earthly path. The real home of these beings was not on earth.&#60;br /&#62;
These divine-human beings led men, without being able to inform them of the principles by which they directed them. For until the fifth subrace of the Atlanteans, the Primal Semites, men had absolutely no capacities for understanding these principles. The faculty of thought, which developed in this subrace, was such a capacity. But this evolved slowly and gradually. Even the last sub-races of the Atlanteans could understand very little of the principles of their divine leaders. They began, at first quite imperfectly, to have a presentiment of such principles. Therefore their thoughts and also the laws which we have mentioned among their governmental institutions, were guessed at rather than clearly thought out.&#60;br /&#62;
The principal leader of the fifth Atlantean subrace gradually prepared it so that in later times, after the decline of the Atlantean way of life, it could begin a new one which was to be wholly directed by the faculty of thought.&#60;br /&#62;
One must realize that at the end of the Atlantean period there existed three groups of man-like beings: 1. The above-mentioned Ã¢â‚¬Å“divine messengers,Ã¢â‚¬Â who in their development were far ahead of the great mass of the people, and who taught divine wisdom and accomplished divine deeds. 2. The great mass of humanity, among which the faculty of thought was in a dull condition, although they possessed natural abilities which modern men have lost. 3. A small group of those who were developing the faculty of thought. While they gradually lost the natural abilities of the Atlanteans through this process, they were advancing to the stage where they could grasp the principles of the Ã¢â‚¬Å“divine messengersÃ¢â‚¬Â with their thoughts.&#60;br /&#62;
The second group of human beings was doomed to gradual extinction. The third however could be trained by a being of the first kind to take its direction into its own hands.&#60;br /&#62;
From this third group the above-mentioned principal leader, whom occult literature designates as Manu, selected the ablest in order to cause a new humanity to emerge from them. These most capable ones existed in the fifth subrace. The faculty of the sixth and seventh sub-races had already gone astray in a certain sense and was not fit for further development.&#60;br /&#62;
The best qualities of the best had to be developed. This was accomplished by the leader through the isolation of the selected ones in a certain place on earth Ã¢â‚¬â€ in inner Asia Ã¢â‚¬â€ where they were freed from any influence of those who remained behind or of those who had gone astray.&#60;br /&#62;
The task which the leader imposed upon himself was to bring his followers to the point where, in their own soul, with their own faculty of thought, they could grasp the principles according to which they had hitherto been directed in a way vaguely sensed, but not clearly recognized by them. Men were to recognize the divine forces which they had unconsciously followed. Hitherto the gods had led men through their messengers; now men were to know about these divine entities. They were to learn to consider themselves as the implementing organs of divine providence.&#60;br /&#62;
The isolated group thus faced an important decision. The divine leader was in their midst, in human form. From such divine messengers men had previously received instructions and orders as to what they were or were not to do. Human beings had been instructed in the sciences which dealt with what they could perceive through the senses. Men had vaguely sensed a divine control of the world, had felt it in their own actions, but they had not known anything of it clearly.&#60;br /&#62;
Now their leader spoke to them in a completely new way. He taught them that invisible powers directed what confronted them visibly, and that they themselves were servants of these invisible powers, that they had to fulfill the laws of these invisible powers with their thoughts. Men heard of the supernatural-divine. They heard that the invisible spiritual was the creator and preserver of the visible physical. Hitherto they had looked up to their visible divine messengers, to the superhuman initiates, and through the latter was communicated what was and was not to be done. But now they were considered worthy of having the divine messenger speak to them of the gods themselves. Mighty were the words which again and again he impressed upon his followers: Ã¢â‚¬Å“Until now you have seen those who led you: but there are higher leaders whom you do not see. It is these leaders to whom you are subject. You shall carry out the orders of the god whom you do not see; and you shall obey one of whom you can make no image to yourselves.Ã¢â‚¬Â Thus did the new and highest commandment come from the mouth of the great leader, prescribing the veneration of a god whom no sensory-visible image could resemble, and therefore of whom none was to be made. Of this great fundamental commandment of the fifth human root race, the well-known commandment which follows is an echo: Ã¢â‚¬Å“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth . . . Ã¢â‚¬Â (Exodus 20:4).&#60;br /&#62;
The principal leader, Manu, was assisted by other divine messengers who executed his intentions for particular branches of life and worked on the development of the new race. For it was a matter of arranging all of life according to the new conception of a divine administration of the world. Everywhere the thoughts of men were to be directed from the visible to the invisible. Life is determined by the forces of nature. The course of human life depends on day and night, on winter and summer, on sunshine and rain. How these influential visible events are connected with the invisible, divine powers and how man was to behave in order to arrange his life in accordance with these invisible powers, was shown to him. All knowledge and all labor was to be pursued in this sense. In the course of the stars and of the weather, man was to see divine decrees, the emanation of divine wisdom. Astronomy and meteorology were taught with this idea. Man was to arrange his labor, his moral life in such a way that they would correspond to the wise laws of the divine. Life was ordered according to divine commandments, just as the divine thoughts were explored in the course of the stars and in the changes of the weather. Man was to bring his works into harmony with the dispensations of the gods through sacrificial acts.&#60;br /&#62;
It was the intention of Manu to direct everything in human life toward the higher worlds. All human activities, all institutions were to bear a religious character. Through this, Manu wanted to initiate the real task imposed upon the fifth root race. This race was to learn to direct itself by its own thoughts. But such a self-determination can only lead to good if man also places himself at the service of the higher powers. Man should use his faculty of thought, but this faculty of thought should be sanctified by being devoted to the divine.&#60;br /&#62;
One can only understand completely what happened at that time if one knows that the development of the faculty of thought, beginning with the fifth subrace of the Atlanteans, also entailed something else. From a certain quarter men had come into possession of knowledge and of arts, which were not immediately connected with what the above-mentioned Manu had to consider as his true task. This knowledge and these arts were at first devoid of religious character. They came to man in such a way that he could think of nothing other than to place them at the service of self-interest, of his personal needs* . . . To such knowledge belongs for example that of the use of fire in human activities. In the first Atlantean time man did not use fire since the life force was available for his service. But with the passage of time he was less and less in a position to make use of this force, hence he had to learn to make tools, utensils from so-called lifeless objects. He employed fire for this purpose. Similar conditions prevailed with respect to other natural forces. Thus man learned to make use of such natural forces without being conscious of their divine origin. So it was meant to be. Man was not to be forced by anything to relate these things which served his faculty of thought to the divine order of the world. Rather was he to do this voluntarily in his thoughts. It was the intention of Manu to bring men to the point where, independently, out of an inner need, they brought such things into a relation with the higher order of the world. Men could choose whether they wanted to use the insight they had attained purely in a spirit of personal self-interest or in the religious service of a higher world.&#60;br /&#62;
If man was previously forced to consider himself as a link in the divine government of the world, by which for example, the domination over the life force was given to him without his having to use the faculty of thought, he could now employ the natural forces without directing his thoughts to the divine.&#60;br /&#62;
Not all men whom Manu had gathered around him were equal to this decision, but only a few of them. It was from this few that Manu could really form the germ of the new race. He retired with them in order to develop them further, while the others mingled with the rest of mankind. From this small number of men who finally gathered around Manu, everything is descended which up to the present, forms the true germs of progress of the fifth root race. For this reason also, two characteristics run through the entire development of this fifth root race. One of these characteristics is peculiar to those men who are animated by higher ideas, who regard themselves as children of a divine universal power; the other belongs to those who put everything at the service of personal interests, of egotism.&#60;br /&#62;
The small following remained gathered around Manu until it was sufficiently fortified to act in the new spirit, and until its members could go out to bring this new spirit to the rest of mankind, which remained from the earlier races. It is natural that this new spirit assumed a different character among the various peoples, according to how they themselves had developed in different fields. The old remaining characteristics blended with what the messengers of Manu carried to the various parts of the world. Thus a variety of new cultures and civilizations came into being.&#60;br /&#62;
The ablest personalities from the circle around Manu were selected for a gradual direct initiation into his divine wisdom, so that they could become the teachers of the others. A new kind of initiate thus was added to the old divine messengers. It consisted of those who had developed their faculty of thought in an earthly manner just as their fellow-men had done. The earlier divine messengers Ã¢â‚¬â€ and also Manu Ã¢â‚¬â€ had not done this. Their development belonged to higher worlds. They introduced their higher wisdom into earthly conditions. What they gave to mankind was a Ã¢â‚¬Å“gift from above.Ã¢â‚¬Â Before the middle of the Atlantean period men had not reached the point where by their own powers they could grasp what the divine decrees were. Now Ã¢â‚¬â€ at the time indicated Ã¢â‚¬â€ they were to attain this point. Earthly thinking was to elevate itself to the concept of the divine. The human initiates united themselves with the divine. This represents an important revolution in the development of the human race. The first Atlanteans did not as yet have a choice as to whether or not they would consider their leaders to be divine messengers. For what the latter accomplished imposed itself as the deed of higher worlds. It bore the stamp of a divine origin. Thus the messengers of the Atlantean period were entities sanctified by their power, surrounded by the splendor which this power conferred upon them. From an external point of view, the human initiates of later times are men among men. But they remain in relation with the higher worlds, and the revelations and manifestations of the divine messengers come to them. Only exceptionally, when a higher necessity arises, do they make use of certain powers which are conferred upon them from above. Then they accomplish deeds which men cannot explain by the laws they know and which therefore they rightly regard as miracles.&#60;br /&#62;
But in all this the higher intention is to put mankind on its own feet, fully to develop its faculty of thought. Today the human initiates are the mediators between the people and the higher powers, and only initiation can make one capable of communication with the divine messengers.&#60;br /&#62;
The human initiates, the sacred teachers, became leaders of the rest of mankind in the beginning of the fifth root race. The great priest kings of prehistory, who are not spoken of in history, but rather in the world of legend, belong among these initiates. The higher divine messenger's retired from the earth more and more, and left the leadership to these human initiates, whom however they assisted in word and deed. Were this not so, man would never attain free use of his faculty of thought. The world is under divine direction, but man is not to be forced to admit this; he is to realize and to understand it by free reflection. When he reaches this point, the initiates will gradually divulge their secrets to him. But this cannot happen all at once. The whole development of the fifth root race is a slow road to this goal. At first Manu himself led his following like children. Then the leadership was gradually transferred to the human initiates. Today progress still consists in a mixture of the conscious and unconscious acting and thinking of men. Only at the end of the fifth root race, when throughout the sixth and seventh sub-races a sufficiently great number of men are capable of knowledge, will the greatest among the initiates be able to reveal himself to them openly. Then this human initiate will be able to assume the principal leadership just as Manu did at the end of the fourth root race. Thus the education of the fifth root race consists in this, that a greater part of humanity will become able freely to follow a human Manu as the germinal race of this fifth root race followed the divine one.

&#60;p&#62;Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. Viewing the written form of the mantra is said to have the same effect -- it is often carved into stones, like the one pictured above, and placed where people can see them.&#60;br /&#62;
Spinning the written form of the mantra around in a Mani wheel (or prayer wheel) is also believed to give the same benefit as saying the mantra, and Mani wheels, small hand wheels and large wheels with millions of copies of the mantra inside, are found everywhere in the lands influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.&#60;br /&#62;
It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this mantra: Om Mani Padme Hum can not really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It is appropriate, though, to say a little about the mantra, so that people who want to use it in their meditation practice will have some sense of what they are doing, and people who are just curious will understand a little better what the mantra is and why it is so important to Tibetan Buddhists. We begin in the next section with some information about the mantra itself.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The True Sound of Truth&#60;br /&#62;
An old story speaks about a similar problem. A devoted meditator, after years concentrating on a particular mantra, had attained enough insight to begin teaching. The student's humility was far from perfect, but the teachers at the monastery were not worried. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;A few years of successful teaching left the meditator with no thoughts about learning from anyone; but upon hearing about a famous hermit living nearby, the opportunity was too exciting to be passed up. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The hermit lived alone on an island at the middle of a lake, so the meditator hired a man with a boat to row across to the island. The meditator was very respectful of the old hermit. As they shared some tea made with herbs the meditator asked him about his spiritual practice. The old man said he had no spiritual practice, except for a mantra which he repeated all the time to himself. The meditator was pleased: the hermit was using the same mantra he used himself -- but when the hermit spoke the mantra aloud, the meditator was horrified! &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;What's wrong?&#34; asked the hermit. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;I don't know what to say. I'm afraid you've wasted your whole life! You are pronouncing the mantra incorrectly!&#34; &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;Oh, Dear! That is terrible. How should I say it?&#34; &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The meditator gave the correct pronunciation, and the old hermit was very grateful, asking to be left alone so he could get started right away. On the way back across the lake the meditator, now confirmed as an accomplished teacher, was pondering the sad fate of the hermit. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;It's so fortunate that I came along. At least he will have a little time to practice correctly before he dies.&#34; Just then, the meditator noticed that the boatman was looking quite shocked, and turned to see the hermit standing respectfully on the water, next to the boat. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;Excuse me, please. I hate to bother you, but I've forgotten the correct pronunciation again. Would you please repeat it for me?&#34; &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;You obviously don't need it,&#34; stammered the meditator; but the old man persisted in his polite request until the meditator relented and told him again the way he thought the mantra should be pronounced. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The old hermit was saying the mantra very carefully, slowly, over and over, as he walked across the surface of the water back to the island. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The Meaning of the Mantra &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#34;There is not a single aspect of the eighty-four thousand sections of the Buddha's teachings which is not contained in Avalokiteshvara's six syllable mantra &#34;Om Mani Padme Hum&#34;, and as such the qualities of the &#34;mani&#34; are praised again and again in the Sutras and Tantras.... Whether happy or sad, if we take the &#34;mani&#34; as our refuge, Chenrezig will never forsake us, spontaneous devotion will arise in our minds and the Great Vehicle will effortlessly be realized.&#34;&#60;br /&#62;

&#60;p&#62;People who learn about the mantra naturally want to know what it means, and often ask for a translation into English or some other Western language. However, Om Mani Padme Hum can not really be translated into a simple phrase or even a few sentences.&#60;br /&#62;
All of the Dharma is based on Buddha's discovery that suffering is unnecessary: Like a disease, once we really face the fact that suffering exists, we can look more deeply and discover it's cause; and when we discover that the cause is dependent on certain conditions, we can explore the possibility of removing those conditions. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Buddha taught many very different methods for removing the cause of suffering, methods appropriate for the very different types and conditions and aptitudes of suffering beings. For those who had the capacity to understand it, he taught the most powerful method of all, a method based on the practice of compassion. It is known as the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, because practicing it benefits all beings, without partiality. It is likened to a vast boat that carries all the beings in the universe across the sea of suffering.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Within the Mahayana the Buddha revealed the possibility of very quickly benefiting all beings, including oneself, by entering directly into the awakened state of mind, or Buddhahood, without delay. Again, there are different ways of accomplishing this, but the most powerful, and at the same time the most accessible, is to link ones own mind with the mind of a Buddha.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In visualization practice we imagine ourselves to be a Buddha, in this case the Buddha of Compassion, Chenrezig. By replacing the thought of yourself as you with the thought of yourself as Chenrezig, you gradually reduce and eventually remove the fixation on your personal self, which expands your loving kindness and compassion, toward yourself and toward others, and your intelligence and wisdom becomes enhanced, allowing you to see clearly what someone really needs and to communicate with them clearly and accurately. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In most religious traditions one prays to the deities of the tradition in the hopes of receiving their blessing, which will benefit one in some way. In the vajrayana Buddhist tradition, however, the blessing and the power and the superlative qualities of the enlightened beings are not considered as coming from an outside source, but are believed to be innate, to be aspects of our own true nature. Chenrezig and his love and compassion are within us.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Chenrezig: The Embodiment of Compassion&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In doing the visualization practice we connect with the body and voice and mind of the Buddha by the three aspects of the practice. By our posture and certain gestures we connect with the body, by reciting the words of the liturgy and by repeating the mantra we connect with the voice, and by imagining the visual form of the Buddha we connect with the mind.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Om Mani Padme Hum is the mantra of Chenrezig. In the words of Kalu Rinpoche, &#34;Through mantra, we no longer cling to the reality of the speech and sound encountered in life, but experience it as essentially empty. Then confusion of the speech aspect of our being is transformed into enlightened awareness.&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;That enlightened awareness includes whatever we might need to understand in order to save any beings, including ourselves, from suffering. For that reason the entire Dharma, the entire truth about the nature of suffering and the many ways of removing it's causes, is said to be contained in these six syllables.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;A good many people hearing of the Edda or of the Norse myths think mainly of Balder, the sun-god, who was slain by a twig of mistletoe; or they may conjure up mighty Thor, hurler of thunderbolts and lightning, whose footsteps make the earth quake. Or perhaps they remember Loki, trickster, mischief-maker without malice, who seems constantly to stir up trouble, yet as often by imaginative wit and intelligence resolves the difficulties he has caused.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The Masks of Odin is a provocative study of &#34;the wisdom of the ancient Norse.&#34; While it portrays the various aspects and forms that Odin assumes in order to gain knowledge of the nine worlds inhabited by gods and giants, humans, elves, and dwarfs, Elsa-Brita Titchenell has a larger purpose in view. As a serious student of both Edda and Theosophy her loom is cosmic in reach, its warp representing the theosophia perennis or enduring god-wisdom and its woof the Edda, whose many-colored threads she weaves into colorful and often inspiring patterns of interpretation.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The world's oldest traditions hold that long ago all peoples, however widely separated, were the common inheritors of a body of sacred truths initially imparted to the earliest humanities by divine beings from higher regions; and, further, that myth-makers of every land were in greater or less degree transmitters of this archaic wisdom/science. Against this backdrop the author undertakes to interpret some of the more important sagas of the Norse Edda, retranslating them from the Swedish text and comparing it with the original Icelandic. Her aim is not to hammer out just another version of the Edda when already several in English are available both in prose and verse, but rather &#34;to penetrate to the core of inspired meaning&#34; hidden within the world's mythic lore. To attempt this would have been out of the question, she believes, but for two radical changes in the general thought life: first, the disclosure about a century ago of a significant portion of the universal theosophic philosophy by H. P. Blavatsky and its emancipating effect on the human spirit, and second, the new developments in Western science.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In Part I Elsa Titchenell outlines the broad features of the principal characters involved in the drama of cosmic and terrestrial creation as recorded in the Edda, including the gifts to early mankind of spirit, mind, and vitality by three Aesir (gods) so that we humans in time might become &#34;godmakers.&#34; Relating theosophic teachings and current findings of astrophysics and physics to traditional mythic symbols she depicts the ancient mythographers as philosophers and scientists of stature. To the Norse bards or skalds, the interplay between gods and giants represented the continuous interaction of spirit and matter on a series of &#34;shelves&#34; or planes as &#34;rivers of lives&#34; moved, each after its own manner, through mansion after mansion of planetary and solar spheres within Allfather-Odin's domain.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In Part II, the author's Notes preceding the translated lays provide the reader with an invaluable guide through the often bewildering maze of metaphor and symbolic allusion. The opening saga is the well-known Voluspa or Sibyl's Prophecy, that tells of the formation of worlds, of Odin's search for wisdom in the spheres of matter, and of the &#34;toppling of the world tree&#34; when the gods withdraw and earth is no more -- until the Vala (Sibyl) sees another earth rising from the sea as old ills are resolved and the Aesir return. In the High One's Song, we read of Odin's consummate experience when for nine whole nights he &#34;hung in the windtorn tree,&#34; the Tree of Life, so that he might &#34;raise the runes&#34; and drink the mead of omniscience.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There is much to delight and instruct in the retelling of lay after lay, each with its own story and truth to impart. Admittedly only a portion of the available material is treated, and this is drawn chiefly from the Poetic or Elder Edda of Saemund the Wise. Cognizant, moreover, of the challenge posed by the mystery-language of symbolism in use by the poet-philosophers of old, the author is hopeful that others will find in this &#34;fragment of runic wisdom&#34; the stimulus to pursue further and more complete studies of the ancient Norse records.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Whether writing as Eddist or theosophist, amateur scientist, mythographer, or translator, Elsa-Brita Titchenell by lucid and perceptive scholarship has earned for The Masks of Odin an honored place among Edda literature.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;It was in the early 1950s when the writer picked up a book at random in the Theosophical University Library in Altadena -- a beautifully bound volume of the Edda in Swedish. Though familiar since childhood with at least some portions of the Norse &#34;god-stories&#34; this was the first time I had read the poetic lays of the Elder Edda. Browsing through the verses and delighting in their picturesque &#34;kennings,&#34; I was enjoying the quaint turns of phrase when suddenly, as by a lightning bolt, I was struck by a dazzling flash of meaning, a hint of basic truth. Skeptical at first, I began to read with greater attention and soon became convinced that the Edda ranks among the world's sacred traditions as a genuine scripture, a goldmine of natural history and spiritual treasure. This is connoted also by its Swedish name: gudasaga -- a divine story or god-spell -- the archaic form of the word &#34;gospel.&#34;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Many years later, after much scrutiny and comparison with other myths, enough evidence of the Edda's scriptural content had accumulated to warrant collating at least a few fragments that seem to have secreted in them a discernible esoteric meaning. Among the great wealth of material in the Norse myths it has been necessary to be selective, partly because there are several versions of many of the tales, partly because the purpose of this book is to bring out and suggest interpretations of those myths which are of particular relevance in our time.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Most of the lays and stories herein are translated from the Codex Regius -- the &#34;royal codex&#34; -- which was written down by Saemund the Wise a thousand years ago, though their content has doubtless been known much longer than that. Today they are luminous with meaning due to two seemingly independent circumstances: first, the disclosure of a generous portion of the universal theosophic philosophy in the late nineteenth century and the broadening influence this has exerted; and second, following closely thereafter, the development of a more enlightened science in the West.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The story of Codex Regius is itself a fascinating one. King Frederik III of Denmark sent Thormod Torfaeus to Iceland with an open letter dated 27 May 1662 which empowered him to purchase ancient manuscripts and other material containing information on Icelandic history. He delivered it to Bishop Brynjolv Sveinsson, an ardent collector of memorabilia since his accession to the bishopric of Skalholt in 1639. Soon afterward the bishop sent the king a gift of several manuscripts; Torfaeus made a catalogue of these which Gudbrand Vigfusson lists in his Prolegomena to the Sturlunga Saga. In this collection the manuscript cited as No. 6 is titled &#34;Edda Saemundi; quarto.&#34; It was a treasure of the Royal Library at Copenhagen until a few years ago when it was returned to Iceland, where it is now housed in the Arna Magnussonar collection. No one knows how Bishop Brynjolv came in possession of it, but he must have acquired it some twenty years before Torfaeus' arrival as he had inscribed the first page with his own name in Latin, Lupus Loricatus (contracted to [[symbol]] -- cf. plate 1 of the photographic reproduction of Voluspa from the Codex Regius manuscript), with the date 1643; he also had a copy made on white parchment.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Several versions of the Edda are extant in part. One collection of handwritten texts is that of Arne Magnusson, believed to emanate from the same source as Saemund's; another is the Codex Wormianus (from which are taken the Songs of Rig and Waywont), and Flatoboken. The Spells of Groa, Verywise's Exchange, and the Lay of Odin's Corpse are from Swedish translations of paper copies; these do not occur in Codex Regius. The Song of the Mill is from Snorri's Edda.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The lays, rendered here were first translated into English from the two Swedish versions of Godecke and Sander, with frequent reference to the commentaries of the Swedish scholar Viktor Rydberg; thereafter the result was compared with the Wimmer and Jonsson Saemundar Eddu, a photographic facsimile of the old Icelandic Codex Regius manuscript with a printed transliteration facing each page. It is a continuous text with no divisions and only an inserted title to mark the beginning of each lay. Most translations break it into verses of six or eight lines as indicated by the rhythm, but we have chosen in many cases to write the verses as quatrains. There is no rhyming, but an alliterative pattern which with the distinctive tetrameter used in many very early epics gives the lays a peculiar charm.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The Edda consists of two main divisions, as do most scriptures that deal with the creation of cosmos and the evolution of mankind. The first applies to the surrounding world, the second to the &#34;heroes&#34;: races of humanity and their development through stages of immaturity into the thinking, self-conscious men and women we have become. The latter tales sometimes make use of geographic features and of actual historic events to illustrate the much larger picture they disguise. This work concentrates mainly on the earlier portion, which deals with grand principles and universal events, searching out the basic philosophy of divine nature which is valid throughout the vicissitudes of the human venture.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;In translating, both alliteration and meter have unfortunately very often had to be sacrificed, as our purpose is to convey the philosophic and scientific import rather than merely reproduce the poetic style. There already exist several English renditions in verse and prose, many of them accompanied by detailed analyses of the verse forms used in the original. In brief, our aim is not to produce merely another translation but to attempt to penetrate to the core of inspired meaning often concealed within myths. Interpreting and clarifying that inner sense in the Edda is made possible by resorting to the foremost elucidating work of our time, The Secret Doctrine, whose author, H. P. Blavatsky juxtaposed a prodigious array of myths relating to cosmogony as well as human history and the destiny of living beings. In that work are keys showing that the same majestic pattern underlies the varied expressions of different mythic scriptures; we are given an overview of the universe, its periodicity of function and repose, and we discern how divine consciousness reflects itself periodically as a kosmos in space and time.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To find the information the Edda contains we must examine the etymology of names and their connotations, which in some cases are numerous. For this Cleasby's Icelandic Dictionary, completed by Gudbrand Vigfusson in 1869, has proved of inestimable value for it contains copious quotations from the original manuscripts and sometimes presents a strikingly intuitive perception. Undersokningar i Germansk Mitologi (Teutonic Mythology) by Viktor Rydberg also contains scrupulous examination of terms and much information.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;One great problem with a book such as this is to arrange the material in a practical manner without necessitating undue repetition. The lays are reproduced in English with the flavor as nearly unchanged as may be and each one is preceded by explanatory notes. In addition certain themes are given special attention; inevitably some of these will occur more than once though each approach is somewhat different. In the notes, verse numbers are given to indicate whence an interpretation has been derived. Needless to say, many meanings are often contained in a single passage, and frequently they are mere hints requiring some personal insight on the part of the reader, for it is not always possible to elucidate each symbol adequately, nor is it necessary. The spelling of names is intentionally inconsistent, some being given in Icelandic (e.g., Aesir), others in Swedish (e.g., Ager), both to make them easier to distinguish visually by the English-speaking reader and because in many cases the root of a name has a suggestive meaning in one language but does not occur, or has a slightly different connotation, in the other. There are also many instances where the Icelandic grammatical variants, or a Swedish plural or definite form, would make an otherwise familiar word all but unrecognizable, necessitating inevitable compromises in an English rendition. When possible, names have been translated into English to enable a reader to find his own interpretation. A glossary and index have been provided.
